About Nick
Nick Bochette writes about performance, capability, culture, and the conditions that produce excellence.
His perspective comes from spending much of his life in environments where performance was real, measurable, and consequential, and from seeing those environments from more than one side.

A Unique Perspective
Before turning his attention more fully to writing, Nick spent years in competitive athletics, first as a professional soccer player and later as a Division I coach and head coach, working with many high-level amateur and professional players. As an athlete, performance meant preparing to compete. As a coach and an educator, it meant creating the conditions in which other people could develop, perform, and succeed.
Those experiences left him interested not only in results, but in what actually produces them: preparation, standards, leadership, talent, commitment, culture, and the trade-offs that often sit behind exceptional performance.
His interests have never been limited to sports. Nick studied mathematics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and later earned a graduate degree in educational psychology. He has also worked professionally outside athletics. Moving among those different environments reinforced an idea that now runs through much of his writing: the stories people tell about success are often simpler than the mechanisms that actually produce it.
That gap—between what we assume causes excellence and what may truly be responsible for it—is where many of his questions begin.
The work now
Nick's writing examines performance without treating it as a slogan or an abstraction. He is interested in what people and organizations are capable of, what high performance requires, what it costs, and how the environments around us can either develop capability or quietly diminish it.
His first book, Sacrifice: Why Excellence Is Disappearing and the True Cost of Commitment, examines the commitments and trade-offs behind uncommon achievement. His essays explore related questions about capacity, culture, competence, technology, and the conditions that shape what people are able and willing to become.
The subjects vary. The underlying question is usually similar: What actually produces excellence?

Beyond the work
Nick lives in South Carolina with his wife, two daughters, and their rescue dog.
Travel is usually a family pursuit. For Nick, the company matters more than the destination, but in a perfect world the destination involves somewhere worth exploring: a national park, a dramatic landscape, a new culture, or one of those places that makes the world feel considerably larger than it did before you arrived.
Away from writing, he spends a fair amount of time on a bike, primarily road and gravel cycling, with the occasional longer endurance effort. He follows almost any sport given the opportunity, but soccer, cycling, and golf are the ones most likely to have his attention.
